The global events industry can emit hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 annually. One estimate suggests that the events sector may contribute up to 10% of global CO2 emissions from human activities, equating to approximately 4-5 billion tons of CO2 each year.
I. Reducing CO2 emissions from events.
Organizing green and sustainable events is an effective way to reduce carbon emissions. Measures such as choosing eco-friendly venues, using renewable energy, and promoting green transportation can significantly minimize the carbon footprint of events.
While these figures are estimates and can vary depending on the scale and organization of each event, it is evident that the events industry needs to prioritize reducing its environmental impact.
Forest Harmony – A charitable concert event promoting environmental conservation.II. Key elements of a green event.
1. Choosing an environmentally friendly venue.
One of the most important factors in organizing a green event is the choice of venue.
The Forest Harmony event, with its profound message: “Bringing the timeless beauty of classical music into charitable projects that contribute to restoring and preserving endangered forests,” was held at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music.
2. Using recycled materials and energy efficiency.
At Forest Harmony, we used cardboard and greenery to decorate the venue, effectively reducing waste. Additionally, employing LED lights and energy-efficient equipment played a significant role in minimizing carbon emissions.
For the event, we utilized:
20 pieces of honeycomb cardboard, 20mm thick.
12 pieces of honeycomb cardboard, 10mm thick (2m x 1.2m), covered with artwork.
3. Promoting green transportation.
Encouraging attendees to use public transportation, bicycles, or walking to the event is a simple yet effective way to reduce environmental impact.
A unique aspect of Forest Harmony was estimating the CO2 emissions from the performances, including electricity usage, and transportation by organizers, artists, and attendees.
During the event, electricity consumption totaled 700 kWh, assumed to be from thermal power (currently one of the most CO2-intensive energy sources). Each kWh of thermal power emits up to 2.5 kg of CO2, resulting in 1,750 kg of CO2 emissions.
With nearly 400 attendees, 70 artists, and about 100 staff members traveling an average of 30 km within the city on motorbikes (average consumption of 3 liters of fuel/100 km), the transportation contributed an estimated 1,242 kg of CO2 emissions.
The total CO2 emissions from electricity usage and transportation were estimated at 2,992 kg of CO2.
To offset this amount, approximately 600 trees would need to be planted, considering each tree absorbs 5–10 kg of CO2 annually, increasing to 22 kg annually at maturity.
To account for calculation gaps and other activities not detailed, we committed to planting 1,000 trees in Bidoup Nui Ba National Park, a vital source for the Dong Nai River, sustaining life in Saigon and beyond.
4. Leveraging technology for event organization.
Digital invitations: Using e-invitations instead of printed cards reduces resource usage and waste. E-invitations are customizable, quick to send, and environmentally friendly.
Online communication: Promote the event, provide updates, and share information with attendees via email, social media, and websites to minimize printing and save costs.
5. Reusing and donating event products.
Reusing and donating products not only benefits the environment but also fosters a stronger and more connected community.
For instance, banners and backdrops from Forest Harmony were retained for reuse in subsequent seasons. All proceeds from ticket sales and audience contributions were used to plant trees and continue the mission of restoring lost forests.

By adopting these green and sustainable practices in event organization, we hope to inspire others to develop environmentally conscious plans for their upcoming events.
